Newtonians 2007-08
(9th - 12th grade)
We meet from 2:00 - 4:00pm on *approximately* the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month from Sept through April, at the Sculley Academy. Please check the calendar below for the exact dates! A typical week at math club involves learning a mathematical concept, practicing past contest problems, and snack / recess break. Students work individually and in teams during each class. Homework is assigned each time.
There are several competitions that we will be participating in this year. I chose each of these for their various merits. Some emphasize individual achievement; some emphasize team achievement. Everyone will participate in the AMC & Mandelbrot competitions; I will invite students on an individual basis to participate in other competitions (between 4 and 8 students per competition). Every student will receive recognition at the end of the year, at an awards ceremony.
In-house math contests:
Mandelbrot competition (Oct 10th, Oct 31st, Jan 9th, Feb 13th, Mar 12th)
Travel math contests:
UGA Mathematical Tournament (Saturday, Oct 13th) (by invitation only)
AMC-10 (Feb 27th) (9th & 10th grade only)
AMC-12 (Feb 27th) (11th & 12th graders only)
Georgia Tech High School Math Competition (Saturday, Feb 23rd) (by invitation only)
