Wednesday of the Second Week of Lent:

John 8:12 – “Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.’”

Before my family moved to Russia, I was concerned that the long winters and subsequent lack of sunlight would adversely affect our moods, as many studies available at the time linked reductions in daily sunlight hours with depression. I gave those concerns to God every time they cropped up in my mind. A couple of months before our move date, friends found us an apartment large enough to accommodate our family of eight. Paul and I decided to spend our anniversary week getting it ready for our family’s move. It was already well into the five months of Russian winter, with snow drifts piled high all around. Opening our apartment door, we saw something we’ve never seen before or since in any apartment anywhere. We could never have guessed how God had graciously answered our prayers. The apartment owner had recently renovated the space and had laid large white ceramic tiles on the walls, reflecting light in every direction, dispelling all shadows and darkness!

How much more so is Jesus’ light! The light of Christ is not just reflecting some other light. Jesus is both the source of light and the source of life. In the light of Christ there is no darkness, no stumbling, no shadows, no death. In saying “I am the light of the world,” Jesus is offering his light to the whole world, to every person, every group, and every part of creation! This light of Jesus is the light of life. May we hear Jesus’ invitation to “Follow me” and respond with a wholehearted yes, so that we can really live in that light of life today and every day.

Each short Multimedia Lent Devotional is an invitation to set aside time each day during the season preceding Easter. Lent is a solemn 40-day period we observe as we seek to draw near to God prior to the great celebration of Easter. During Lent,

  • we intentionally practice sober reflection, serious repentance, and sincere restitution, in which we more fully recognize our brokenness as humans, looking always to Jesus Christ as our Savior and sanctifier;
  • we seek to live lives marked by simplicity, self-denial, and surrender, in imitation of Christ Jesus, who fasted for 40 days in the wilderness before He began His public ministry;
  • we look for ways in which we express love for neighbors and nations in need in practical ways through generously giving of our time, talents, and treasures.
