Lean into the bosom of Jesus
September 13th, 2026 – Communion Meditation
Each week as we come to the table of communion, the table of grace at which all are welcome, one of us often shares something to think about, something to ponder. That’s a good thing. And, sometimes our thoughts, our bodies, and our circumstances trouble us. Sometimes what we need most is a greater awareness of our risen Lord’s presence. Today I want to invite us to still our bodies and still our thoughts as we let go of all that weighs us down and lean into the embrace of the Father of compassions and the God of all comfort.
As I read some beautiful promises that God has given us in Scripture. I encourage you to activate your imagination and see yourself leaning on the Lord, as the beloved disciple did at the Last Supper. John 13:23 indicates in the Greek that this disciple leaned into the bosom of Jesus, the very same word used to describe Jesus’ relationship with the Father in John 1:18 – No one has ever seen God, yet the only-begotten God, being in the bosom of the Father, he has made him known.
Beloved brothers and sisters in Christ, lay all your burdens down and receive the comfort of Christ as you lean into the bosom of Jesus right here, right now.
2 Corinthians 7:6 – “God … consoles the downcast”
Isaiah 66:13 – “As a mother comforts her child, so I will comfort you”
Psalm 119:50 – “This is my comfort in my distress, that your promise gives me life.”
Matthew 5:4 – “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.”
2 Corinthians 1:3-4 – “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all consolation, who consoles us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to console those who are in any affliction with the consolation with which we ourselves are consoled by God.”
At the Last Supper, Jesus took a loaf of bread, and after blessing it he broke it, gave it to those with him and said, “Take, eat; this is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” Let us eat together.
Jesus then took a cup, and after giving thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; for this cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.’” Let us drink together.
