Jesus promises to give us rest

August 4th, 2024 – Communion Meditation

Today in our Communion Meditation, we’re going to focus on a beloved invitation from Jesus.

Matthew 11:28-30 (NRSV) – “28 Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest  for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Jesus gives a universal invitation to come to him, take his yoke upon us, and learn from him. Jesus promises that he will give rest to all who are weary and are carrying heavy burdens.

Are you weary? Are you carrying heavy burdens? Notice that Jesus doesn’t promise to take away our heavy burdens. Jesus promises to give us rest. As we receive the rest that Jesus promises, we are restored and better able to bear the weight of our heavy burdens.

We are going to read those few verses again. This time, I invite you to close your eyes and give your weariness to Jesus. Receive the rest that Jesus is giving you in your body, your heart, your mind, and your soul.

On the night when the Lord Jesus was betrayed, he took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” (Let us eat together.) In the same way he took the cup also, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” (Let us drink together.) For as often as we eat this bread and drink the cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
