layoffs

Pray the News – May 12th, 2024

This week, a company that opened a 200,000 square foot distribution center in Georgia in 2020 announced that they will be closing their entire operation in Newnan in July, with 727 workers being laid off. This is the largest single layoff in Georgia so far this year.

A quick internet search led me to discover a wonderful cooperative, an ecumenical alliance outreach that has been operating for 17 years in Newnan called “One Roof.” In this ministry, people come together from many churches to serve the Lord, working with families in crisis in Coweta County. They offer food, clothing, financial assistance, shelter, and mental health counseling. Their greatest listed needs currently include kid and senior friendly foods, shelf-stable milk, cereal, macaroni, noodles, tuna, peanut butter, toothpaste, shampoo, soap, as well as gently used clothing. If you’d like to donate any of these items, I am planning to drop off donations to One Roof after our potluck lunch on Sunday, May 26th. I’ll follow this up on our church WhatsApp and text chats.

Psalm 41:1a (NRSV) – “Happy are those who consider the poor.”

Matthew 25:35-36 (NRSV) – “I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.”

Let’s pray for this ministry and for each of the individuals and families affected by the upcoming layoffs.

Lord, we thank you for your assurance that you know all of the needs of all people everywhere. You invite us to strive not to get our needs met, but to strive first for the kingdom of God and your righteousness, and in that, all of our needs will be given to us as well. We hold before you the specific needs of One Roof ministry and the needs of all of the individuals and families who were taken by surprise this week when they found out they were going to be laid off. You are not surprised by this news. We pray that each one would know and experience your provision, your presence, and your power during this upheaval in their lives. We pray that you would send help – donations, volunteers, wisdom, provision – so that the needs of each one may be met. And we ask that you would be glorified through it all.

In the precious name of Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.
