Some very old prayers

June 27th, 2021 – Communion Meditation

Communion, also known as Holy Communion, is something that has been practiced daily by the body of Christ for 2000 years and is one of the main ways that we commune with / meet with God most intimately. One of my regular daily practices to help me to grow spiritually is to study the lives of the saints who have gone before. Today we’re going to incorporate some very old prayers which were written down to benefit the generations to come.

We will start by praying a prayer that Jesus taught us. Will you join me in examining and preparing our hearts to receive Communion by praying the Lord’s prayer together.

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial
and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours
now and for ever. Amen.

We are also going to pray a written in Ireland about 1300 years ago, in the 8th century.

Christ with me,
Christ before me,
Christ behind me,
Christ in me,
Christ beneath me,
Christ above me,
Christ on my right,
Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down,
Christ when I sit down,
Christ when I arise,
Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me,
Christ in every eye that sees me,
Christ in every ear that hears me.

All who seek the Lord are welcome to join together in remembering Christ Jesus and all that He has done for us.

1 Corinthians 11:23b-26 – “the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.”
