At the Back of the North Wind (George MacDonald) audiobook

The story of Diamond and his adventures with the North Wind, sometimes portrayed as the tiny fairy who blows the primrose, and again as the glorious woman whose home is all Out-Doors, and who sweeps through the skies with little Diamond nestled in her hair. Her beautiful friendship for the boy—one of “God’s fools”— wonderfully symbolizes strength and tenderness closely interwoven with this fanciful plot, and set within the narrative of Diamond’s home relationships, and the incidents of his everyday life with father, mother, baby, and Big Diamond (the horse), which are told with great simplicity. This modern fairy tale inspires in the reader a stronger faith in things unseen. Poetically conceived and masterfully written.

George MacDonald (1824 – 1905) was a Scottish author, poet and Christian minister. He was a pioneering figure in the field of modern fantasy literature and the mentor of fellow writer Lewis Carroll. In addition to his fairy tales, MacDonald wrote several works of Christian theology, including several collections of sermons.

His writings have been cited as a major literary influence by many notable authors including Lewis Carroll, W. H. Auden, David Lindsay, J. M. Barrie, Lord Dunsany, Elizabeth Yates, Oswald Chambers, Mark Twain, Hope Mirrlees, Robert E. Howard, L. Frank Baum, T. H. White, Richard Adams, Lloyd Alexander, Hilaire Belloc, G.K. Chesterton, C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, Walter de la Mare, E. Nesbit, Peter S. Beagle, Neil Gaiman and Madeleine L’Engle.

As a personal note, this was one of my favorite books that I read aloud to my children, especially when we lived in Russia and could hear the North Wind howling outside during the long winters! The North Wind reminds me of the Holy Spirit.
