Reflection on Luke 10:21-24 – “At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, ‘I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do. All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and no one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.’ Then he turned to his disciples and said privately, ‘Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. For I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.’”

There’s so much to unpack in every precious portion of Scripture! Jesus was full of joy through the Holy Spirit which spilled over into praise of his Father, the Father, Lord of heaven and earth. Why? Because God has hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.

One theme that runs throughout the Bible is that God humbles those who are proud and lifts up the lowly. Jesus is not in any way dissing wisdom or learning. He’s saying that the pridefulness of those who think that they already know and understand keeps them from being able to see clearly. It’s the ones who have humble hearts and childlike faith, those who are eager to learn and full of wonder, and those who long for more and look to Jesus, who will be able to see, hear, know, and understand who God is and what wisdom looks like. It is then that we will be able to know who we really are. What’s more, this all brings joy to the heart of God!

Oh, that we would have humble hearts and childlike faith! Oh, that we would be eager to learn and be full of wonder! Oh, that we would long for more and look to Jesus! Lord Jesus, thank you for showing us who God is and what wisdom looks like. Thank you for coming to save us and for helping us to see, hear, know, and understand you more. Thank you for showing us who we really are, so that we can be and do all that you created us to be and do. Lord God of heaven and earth, we ask you to fill us with joy through the Holy Spirit. We praise you, God! Joyful, joyful, we adore you!

Each short Multimedia Advent Devotional is an invitation to set aside time each day during a typically busy season preparing for Christmas to rejoice in the coming of our Savior, Christ Jesus, and to respond to God’s invitation to us to join with Him in what He’s doing today.

Advent is a season of the liturgical year observed in most Christian denominations as a time of expectant waiting and preparation for both the celebration of the Nativity of Christ at Christmas and the return of Christ at the Second Coming. Advent is the beginning of the liturgical year in Western Christianity and is part of the wider Christmas and holiday season. Advent is a period in which we are invited to set aside time each day during a typically busy season preparing for Christmas to rejoice in the coming of our Savior, Christ Jesus, and to respond to God’s invitation to us to join with Him in what He’s doing today.
