Pronouns (thank you, Petula Clark!)

Pronouns are such small but powerful words. Instead of thinking of people as enemies, “us” vs “them”, let’s think of people as fellow travelers (“we”) on this beautiful but often difficult journey of life – each one of inestimable value and worthy of love and respect. Let’s break down walls that divide and build bridges of love and understanding. Thinking about and carefully choosing these small words, pronouns, will go a long way towards healing wounds of division. Thank you, Petula Clark, for your great music. May God bless you, protect you, and give you peace!

Music: “Downtown” (Petula Clark)

Words by me: When we divide people up in different factions, into us and them – pronouns! When we are tempted to judge or to blame, deliberately choose pronouns! Just listen to the rhetoric, the way most things are said. Linger for a while – substitute a “we” instead. How can we lose? We can all grow in understanding, in listening, getting to know one another. Choose pronouns – they say more than we think. Pronouns – no finer group of words. Pronouns – we are the ones to include. Don’t hang around when arguments get divisive. Just speak words of life – pronouns! Maybe you know some other places to go where hearts are not as closed – pronouns! Just listen to the voices of the gentle carry over. We’re influenced by what we hear, so do yourself a favor. Just be a friend. We can all grow in understanding, in listening, getting to know one another. Choose pronouns – they say more than we think. Pronouns – no finer group of words. Pronouns – we are the ones to include. And you may find somebody else who wants to understand you, someone who is quite like you, you might just get to know them and get along. We can all grow in understanding, in listening, getting to know one another. Choose pronouns – they say more than we think. Pronouns – no finer group of words. Pronouns – we are the ones to include. Pronouns! Pronouns!
