Scriptures, Songs, and Saints – Light

Tamera lead our church in “Scriptures, Songs, and Saints” this month, on the topic of light.
Light – Scriptures, Songs, & Saints – September 2025
Genesis 1:1-4 – “In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. Then God said, ‘Let
there be light’; and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness.”
Song: Arise and Shine
Exodus tells us how God used light to lead the Israelites in the Wilderness – When Pharoah let the people go, God led the people by the roundabout way of the wilderness toward the Red Sea. The Lord went in front of them in a pillar of cloud by day, to lead them along the way, and in a pillar of fire by night, to give them light, so that they might travel by day and by night. When we need direction, God speaks it through His word. Psalm 119:105 tells us, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
Prophesies regarding the coming of Jesus …
From Zechariah found in Luke 1:78-79 – “By the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from on high will break upon us, to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.”
Luke 2:32 – From Simeon as he held Jesus in his arms – “He will be a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel.”
Song: Light of the World/Sing Hallelujah
John 1:1-5 – “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the
darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.”
Song: Here I am to Worship
Proverbs 4:18 – “But the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, which shines brighter and brighter until full day.”
C.S. Lewis states – “It is easy to acknowledge, but almost impossible to realize for
long, that we are mirrors . . . whose brightness, if we are bright, is wholly derived from
the sun that shines upon us.”
Reflections from Psalms:
Psalm 27:1 – “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?”
Psalm 4:6-8 – “Many are saying, ‘Who will show us any good?’ Lift up the light of Your countenance upon us, O Lord! You have put gladness in my heart, more than when their grain and new wine abound. In peace I will both lie down and sleep, For You alone, O Lord, make me to dwell in safety.”
Song: Be The Centre
Communion – Michael
Song: King of Kings
Brennan Manning (1934-2013) – “To live by grace means to acknowledge my whole life story, the light side and the dark. In admitting my shadow side I learn who I am and what God’s grace means.”

Song: Your Eyes See Me
John 8:12 – “Again, Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.’”
Ephesians 5:8-9 – “For once you were darkness, but now in the Lord you are light. Live as children of light— for the fruit of the light is found in all that is good and right and true.”
1 John 1:7 – “But, if we walk in the light as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.”
Oswald Chambers reflects “To walk in the light” means that everything that is of the darkness actually drives me closer to the light.
Andrew Peterson (contemporary Christian musician and author) – “The burden God places on each of us is to become who we are meant to be. We are most fully ourselves when Christ most fully lives in us and through us. The mother shines brightest with her child in her arms, the father when he forgives his wandering son, and the artist when he or she is drawing attention to grace, by showing the pinprick of light overcoming the darkness in the painting, or the story, or the song. The world knows darkness. Christ came into the world to show us light. I have seen it, have been blinded by it, invaded by it. I will tell its story.”
Song: Waymaker
Jesus spoke these words in the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5:14-16 – “You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hidden. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.”
Catherine of Siena (14th century) – “Start being brave about everything, driving out darkness and spreading light as well. Don’t look at your weakness, but realize that in Christ crucified you can do everything.”
Francis of Assisi (12th-13th century) – “All the darkness in the world cannot extinguish the light of a single candle.”
Song: This Little Light of Mine
St. Josemaria Escriva (20th century) – “Don’t let your life be sterile. Be useful. Blaze a trail. Shine forth with the light of your faith… and light up all the ways of the earth with the fire of Christ that you carry in your heart.”
Isaiah 58:6-11 – “Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover them, and not to hide yourself from your own kin? Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up quickly; your vindicator shall go before you, the glory of the Lord shall be your rearguard. Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer; you shall cry for help, and he will say, Here I am. If you remove the yoke from among you, the pointing of the finger, the speaking of evil, if you offer your food to the hungry and satisfy the needs of the afflicted, then your light shall rise in the darkness and your gloom be like the noonday. The Lord will guide you continually, and satisfy your needs in parched places, and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters never fail.”
Song: Shine Jesus Shine
Rachel Held Evans (1981-2019) – “God, go with us. Help us to be an honor to the church. Give us the grace to follow Christ’s word, to be clear in our task and careful in our speech. Give us open hands and joyful hearts. Let Christ be on our lips. May our lives reflect a love of truth and compassion. Let no one come to us and go away sad. May we offer hope to the poor, and solace to the disheartened. Let us so walk before God’s people, that those who follow us might come into his kingdom. Let us sow living seeds, words that are quick with life, that faith may be the harvest in people’s hearts. In word and in example let your light shine in the dark like the morning star.”
Numbers 6:24-26 – “The Lord bless you and keep you, The Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you, The Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace. Amen.”
