Stand Firm (original song)

I wrote this song in 1986 when we lived in Australia, and we actually sang it in a couple of worship services at our church. I’m pretty passionate about Scripture songs because they’re great memory aids – the Bible was given to us as a way to find life, light, and love. I really love these particular verses because they describe so well what we need in order to be able to stand firm in this world. Our enemies are not people but things like lies, evil, apathy, inaction, laziness, hardheartedness. I hope this encourages you to keep seeking all that is good, holy, and beautiful. Keep seeking God. Jesus Christ is the word of God! Be alert. And keep praying. None of us can stand firm alone.

Ephesians 6:14-18 (NIV 1984) – “Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.”

Words: Stand firm, stand firm, stand firm, stand firm. Go forth, go forth, go forth, go forth. With the belt of truth buckled round your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes with the gospel of peace. Take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit at all times, pray in the Spirit in all things, pray in the Spirit with all requests, keep praying for the saints!
