The Price of Words (thank you, Bryan Ferry!)

Words can heal, words can hurt. Can I invite and challenge us all to be more careful with our words and think before we speak? Many years ago I wrote out the T.H.I.N.K. acronym for my own family and pinned it on the bulletin board in the room where we home schooled our children for 23 years (you’ll see it in this video). That simple acronym reminds us to ask 5 questions of ourselves before we say something – is it true? is it helpful? is it inspiring? is it necessary? is it kind? If we can answer “yes” for all five, then we can speak carefully. My hope today is that we can all use our tongues to bring life and both refrain from and turn away from angry, condemning, toxic, egotistical, cutting, or wounding words. Thank you, Bryan Ferry, for your great music. May God bless you, protect you, and give you peace!

Music: “The Price of Love” (Bryan Ferry)

Words by me: Is it True? Is it Helpful? Inspiring? Necessary? Kind? We talk too much, we laugh too loud. We say words rashly in every crowd. That’s the price of words, angry words – a debt we pay with tears and pain. The price of words, condemning words – it costs us more when we’re to blame. To say mean things to one another has consequences as we will discover. We’re speaking slow, we’re speaking fast. We like to talk but can’t take words back. That’s the price of words, toxic words – a debt we pay with tears and pain. The price of words, egocentric words – it costs us more when we’re to blame. Listen . . . To say mean things to one another has consequences as we will discover. We’re speaking slow, we’re speaking fast. We like to talk but can’t take words back. That’s the price of words, cutting words – a debt we pay with tears and pain. The price of words, wounding words – it costs us more when we’re to blame.
