Chess

We believe Chess is a great game and an important one to learn how to play. It requires thinking skills, so is good at developing those kinds of skills.

P and J each played in a scholastic tournament in the fall of 1999, in which they won trophies–P came 5th in the 2nd grade division, and J placed 3rd in the Kindergarten division. Since that time, we haven’t participated in any other tournaments, but they each continue to work on their skills, and enjoy the game. P was able to participate in a Chess Camp in the summer of 2001, which he thoroughly enjoyed. M is learning the game; all three boys enjoy lying on the family room floor challenging daddy to a match.

We use Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess and Chess by Laszlo Polgar to learn strategies. The children play each other, Paul, the computer (Sierra’s Complete Chess), or the Game Boy Advanced!
