Unit Studies

Unit Studies (since 1999/2000)

In our experience, doing 36 weeks of school with the same format, week in, week out, becomes a bit of a drag towards the latter half of the school year. So to spice things up, we do six unit studies throughout the year, i.e. we do 5 weeks of “regular” school followed by one week of unit study.

Unit Studies we have done include:

created web pages
luminous light (studied properties of light, mirrors, eyes)
combined Ancient Egypt and oceanography studies on a beach!
human genome project / genetics
the last millenium
studying Colonial Williamsburg prior to a trip we made there
building electronics projects
creative photo albums (from taking the pictures to making the albums)
charting our favorite things
making wooden model planes (that actually fly) and studying flight
chemistry lab
planning and performing a Sculley Academy open house
studying and replicating some of Galileo’s inventions
designing and building toothpick bridges to enter into a contest at our local science museum
origami
Modular origami web sites–
